REPORTS TO:                          General Manager

STATUS:                                  Exempt, Full Time

STARTING WAGE:                  Level 8; ($37,544 - $60,320) DOQ         


JOB SUMMARYA member of the Management Team, the Human Resources Manager administers human resource policies, programs and practices.  S/he recommends, plans, develops and implements a wide range of personnel activities and programs, including employment law compliance, recruitment and hiring, compensation and benefits administration, employee relations, training, safety and records maintenance. The Human Resource Manager develops and implements approved short and long range department goals and plans with the General Manager. S/he evaluates reports, decisions and results of the human resource department in relation to established goals.  S/he recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvement in efficiency and service of human resource programs. The Human Resource Manager works with the General Manager and department supervisors/managers to identify and address the co-op’s technical and developmental training needs. S/he plans, designs and delivers training as appropriate, or identifies and hires qualified internal or outside trainers.  S/he also serves as a resource to supervisors and managers and is available to discuss personnel and legal issues.  S/he conducts research as to respond to unique and/or specific questions and provides training to others as necessary. Coordinates annual open-enrollment; Completes paperwork to enroll staff in benefits plans as needed.  Provides training, information and technical assistance to respond to benefits-related questions and resolve benefits related disputes. Works with benefits brokers to update or change benefits plans to maintain quality and cost effectiveness.  Performs analysis and recommends changes to benefits policies, programs and practices to General Manager. The Human Resources Manager is involved in a wide range of employee relations issues. S/he oversees the production of the monthly employee newsletter and works to foster communication through various other methods, including memos, meetings, surveys, etc. S/he is available to meet with employees to resolve workplace issues, hear concerns or complaints and to respond to an array of issues. S/he serves as the Co-op’s EEO specialist to ensure the work environment is free of harassment or inappropriate discrimination.  S/he may conduct internal investigations as necessary. The Human Resource Manager works to ensure consistent application of personnel policies, and may facilitate the grievance and/or mediation process.  S/he may work with supervisors and managers to initiate disciplinary action and facilitate termination sessions.


Minimum Requirements

Education:               Bachelor’s degree.  Direct experience in human resource management may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:             5 years human resources experience at the supervisory/management level required.

                                PHR certification required, SPHR preferred.

                                Previous retail operations experience preferred.


Qualifications (knowledge, skills, abilities):

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, members and employment applicants, attorneys and state/federal agencies.

Demonstrated understanding and experience in administration of employment law, human resources processes and practices in a rapidly changing environment.

Strong communication skills, including written, verbal and conflict resolution skills.

Ability to work with and influence individuals at all levels of the organization.

Well developed project planning and management skills.

Strong judgment and decision-making ability.

Ability to prioritize, organize, delegate, and handle multiple tasks & projects with nominal supervision.

Requires basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint & Excel. 

Requires the ability to maintain proprietary, financial and other sensitive information in confidential manner.


Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to sit for long periods of time, up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as computer, phone, copier, stapler, calculator, etc.
  • Ability to rapidly record notes during interviews and other meetings.
  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend and reach.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills.
